Microsoft Scam - "This computer is configured to require..."

Post by Paul Pritsis » Tue Sep 22, 2015 10:53 pm

You may have received a phone call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft and your computer is infected with a virus and they need to clean it for you. Well, if it wasn't infected then it certainly is now!

Now each time you turn on the computer a password prompt appears with the text:

"This computer is configured to require a password in order to start up"

If you have a recovery disk with a DOS prompt facility boot with that, or alternatively remove the hard drive and stick it in another computer as a "D" drive.

1) Navigate to the \windows\system32\config folder

2) Backup the registry hives in this folder to a temporary location. The files are:
SOFTWARE
SYSTEM
SAM
SECURITY
DEFAULT

3) Navigate to \windows\system32\config\RegBack

4) Copy all registry hives from this folder into the \windows\system32\config folder

5) Reboot the PC or reinstall the hard drive back into the machine

It should boot up as normal now. Don't forget to check the computer thoroughly with a decent antivirus program, who knows what else they have done.
