Method 1:
Use System Restore to restore to a previous restore point.
1) Type Recovery in the search box.
2) Click Recovery in the search results.
3) Click on Open System Restore.
4) Select a Restore Point to a date prior to the problem occurring.
5) Follow the prompts and reboot the machine when finished.

Method 2:
Use File Explorer to copy the Desktop information.
1) Type File Explorer in the search box.
2) Click File Explorer from the search results.
3) Navigate to the folder "c:\user\your account name".
4) Open "c:\users\your user account" folder. If you see two Desktop folders with one blank and the other with your Desktop items you need to delete the blank one.
2) Copy the desktop folder with your desktop items from "c:\users\your account name" folder to "c:\windows\system32\config\systemprofile\".
3) Restart the computer.
